Festive Harbour marketplace – crafted items

Folkestone Festive Harbour Marketplace opens on at 12 noon for the last two Fridays before Christmas and trades until 8pm.  Then, open every weekend from 11am to 6pm until Christmas Eve, there’s a lot for people to enjoy.  There’s artwork, food and drink, wearables and crafted items.    Folkelife gives you a rundown of what you can find in the craft department:

insilver

Aimi has settled in to Folkestone Harbour with her workshop on site.  Creating many silver items, you can see her at work and understand the process behind making any item of jewellery.  She talked to us in depth about her work and you can read her story here.

silver by the sea

Mum and daughter duo Sam and Jas have been residents at Folkestone Harbour Marketplace for years and have a reliably beautiful stock of handmade sea-glass jewellery.  They roam and comb the local beaches before heading to their workshop to make what they’ve found into items you can purchase from their hut.  There are also crystals, and artworks created by them on offer.  It’s a treasure trove of a hut and well worth a visit.

Helen is also a regular at Christmas for the Festive Marketplace and can be found working at her desk outside her hut.  All the creations are from recycled silver which comes from NHS x-ray films. The white image of your bones in the film is silver nitrate, and this is in all film, but more predominantly in black and white films.  The NHS has a duty to keep its archive for a number of years before disposing of it responsibly.  And this is then what Helen uses.

Deryl Gillam Jones is known to some for his hockey skills, and known to many others for his creative flare when it comes to ceramics.  His seascape pottery embodies the feel of the waves that are around us.  He has captured the many blues and greens of the sea in his pottery.  All his wares are dishwasher/microwave and oven safe.  He has bird feeders for outdoors and wonderfully spiky flower pots.

wakana

This classical stoneware is presented in soft brown and grey hues.  With delightfully proportioned mugs, there are also serving dishes, plates and bowls.  The vases are organically shaped so that they present flowers and plants very well.  Come and find the perfect espresso cup or finger bowl.

twisted treasure

What goes on in the mind of Nathan Trustam is anyone’s guess, but the creations that come from his workshop are full of fun and are definitely unique.  He creates lamps from anything that will stand still long enough.  If you have a Star Wars fan, or lover of old cameras, you will be sure to find something in this hut that you never knew you were looking for.

Luv Decor

These pretty little handmade glass gifts are surprisingly durable as well as dainty.  Veronika mouth-blows these glass items and then hand-paints them for every occasion.  You really need to see the detail to appreciate the work that goes into creating each one.

burning desires

If you have a box and wanted it adorned with pyrography then this is the hut for you.  In fact, you can choose your box here too.  These could be memory boxes, or special gifts for Christmas Eve.  They can be personalised too.  There are also beautiful artworks of animals and organic designs that are quite mesmeric, especially when you can see them being made before your eyes.

pebble folke

A regular trader at Folkestone Festive Marketplace, find a beautiful picture made from pebbles from our folk here at Pebble Folke.  They can create bespoke art for any occasion and have Christmas decorations in their inimitable style too.

gaia studio

Gaia started out as one hut at the Festive Marketplace in 2022.  Now they have their own bricks and mortar on Folkestone Harbour Arm in the old waiting rooms.  There’s also a hut in the Marketplace to show off a little of what they have in the main store.  Alex’s beautifully crafted chopping boards and wooden spoons are just the tip of the iceburg.  There’s a wealth of stunning items in this hut.
