award-winning Shoreline – Best Flat for Folkestone Penthouse
Shoreline Folkestone has won the award for Best Flat in the 2024 Evening Standard New Homes awards. Judged by an independent panel of property experts, the Shoreline Penthouse was up against lofts, mansion block apartments, heritage conversions and other spectacular top-floor living spaces. The sea views and beach location were singled out as making this penthouse a prime spot for entertaining and coastal living. Folkelife has followed the build since it started.
built to last
Shoreline Folkestone was designed by multi-award-winning architects ACME. The judges were looking at a range of categories such as location, design, environmental friendliness, architectural merit and challenges overcome. And the scalloped design, mimicking the waves, with its glazed, ceramic brick finish was noted by the awarding body in their quote about Shoreline:
“It’s a truly spectacular flat overlooking the beach. Beautiful details, with no expense spared on the fixtures and finishes. A series of balconies and terraces for entertaining – all with views of the sea. This winning entry has a fantastic location right by the beach in a town which is enjoying a real regeneration renaissance.”
The Beach Houses, apartments and penthouses are available for sale and there are two rental properties for short-stay visitors.
regeneration of folkestone
Shoreline is the first residential building in the redevelopment of Folkestone Harbour. Folkestone Harbour & Seafront Development Company has been renovating the area since purchasing it in 2004. The renovations of the Harbour Arm, Station and Viaduct have provided a public space for people to enjoy. Shoreline itself is built on the remains of the indoor pool of a hotel that stood in the 1900s. This area has had many guises over the years, most recently being a lorry park.
In order to make the site look more attractive, once extensive sea defense works were carried out, the land was covered in shingle. This makes the beach area look much bigger than it is. The beach starts the other side of the boardwalk which was installed to create a link between the Lower Leas Coastal Park, Mermaid Beach and beyond, to the Harbour area. This is hugely popular all throughout the year residents and visitors to Folkestone.
beyond the harbour
The regeneration stretches far beyond Folkestone Harbour. Creative Folkestone (CF) has been integral in growing the creative industries now working from The Old High Street and surrounds. Buildings were renovated and given to the CF for a peppercorn rent to enable artists and creatives to live and work in the town.
New schools have been built as well as state-of-the-art sports amenities for the whole community to benefit from. Three Hills Sports Park has hockey, cricket and athletics facilities which primary school children from across the district have access to. F51, the world’s first multi-storey skate park has a boxing gym, 15m climbing wall as well as flow, street and bowl floors for skating and BMXing.
Doug Acton, Sales & Marketing Director at Shoreline says: “It’s fantastic for residents and the local community alike to be able to celebrate this significant award win for Shoreline’s penthouse. It recognises everything that makes Shoreline so special; from its stunning beachside location to its high-quality design and is another step forward for Folkestone, as it undergoes a well-deserved comeback.”
