Barney And The Pizza – The Goods Yard

Barney And The Pizza has been running since 2017 and has been part of The Goods Yard in Folkestone’s Harbour since 2021.  Barney’s 400° C oven is ready to serve delicious, locally sourced, freshly made pizza. New for 2025 is Slices, based up on the Arm near the stage.  Here you can get slices of 20 inch pizza, and washed down with beer whilst you enjoy live music every weekend.  Folkelife met with Barney to find out the menu.

“I come from Canterbury but spend a lot of time in Folkestone and have had my eye on being a trader on the Arm since I started Barney And The Pizza.  It’s just the perfect place.  There’s no where else quite like it.  You can go for a walk along the Arm, get something to eat and drink, now you can play mini golf too – which is going to be the best start to my day!  But when the sun’s out it’s gorgeous, and even when it’s windy, you just get a real sense of having been somewhere, and been outside and having had a good time.”

locally sourced ingredients

“Before we got to the Arm, we would do parties, weddings, camping and so on.  All of our ingredients are locally sourced and fresh, so we get the best flavour for our pizzas.  Our oven cooks the pizzas for about 60-90 seconds at over 400° C and is a wood-fired oven.  Even our wood is from 5 minutes from where I live.  Those are the best-tasting pizzas in my opinion.  What you get from us is the freshest pizza, from ingredients to how it’s cooked – right in front of you.

“We make our own pizza ovens too – Agnes Outdoors – which are available for people to make their own pizzas at home.  The true make-your-own-pizza-at-home kit!”

Freshly baked Neopolitans

“All of our pizzas have a tomato base using San Marzano tomatoes from Naples.  We have a panchetta, courgette and caramelised onion pizza which is a real favourite, and my favourite too.  We caramelise all our onions ourselves.  There’s an artichoke with Kentish lemon oil; there’s a salami, smoked buffalo mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and rocket.  We’ve got an anchovy, red onion and black olives… and the usuals like margherita and pepperoni too.  Everyone will be happy!

“Being based in The Goods Yard we’ve got a bigger shed to work from than our little trailer.  It’s been renovated for 2025 with a new oven and extended working space. We’ve grown a lot since 2021, and are now setting up Vinnies and Slices here too. We have a regular customer base and so we know what they like, and how we can experiment to bring new things to the menu. Having that communication with our regulars is one thing I’m really proud of.  If they ask for something, we can respond.”

“I’m really excited about having a place on the Harbour Arm as well as our unit in The Goods Yard.  From where we are on the Arm we’ll be by the stage and have the most fantastic view out to sea.  It’s one of the areas when the sun is out it’s just the best place to be.  Live music, beer in hand, and then a slice of pizza to snack on in the sun.

“Our pizzas on the Arm are going to be cooked in an electric oven, rather than the wood-fired pizzas in The Goods Yard.  You will have a selection of toppings on a 20 inch pizza, cut into slices.  These pizzas are cooked for about 4 to 5 minutes, rather than the 60 to 90 seconds of the wood-fired pizza in The Goods Yard so they taste quite different.  It’s good to be able to offer different pizza styles and options as it shows the wealth of variety you can enjoy here at the Harbour.”

“The vibe around the middle of the Arm is relaxed and the place to drink and nibble rather than eating a slap-up meal. We’ll be serving cocktail slushies and a good variety of beer.  People come to the middle of the Arm for the DJ and a dance so won’t be eating a whole 20 inch pizza… by themselves.  Also, the view we get from that hut is spectacular.  The visitors are great at building the atmosphere too.  Folkestone really is the best destination; the parking is right here, and such a choice of food and drink venues on site.  It means you can come and visit again and again and try something new each time.”

Harbour Big Screen

“We did our first work on the Arm in 2020 when the Big Screen was showing drive-in movies.  That was a great experience and we really enjoyed that.  2021 was even better as we had customers walking up to us.  Now, with a few more years under our belt we’re part of the buzz and vibe that happens when people are out enjoying themselves at the Harbour. I love it!”
